Visas & Customs RequirementsGeneral Requirements:As an American, you are considered a non European Economic Area, or EEA, national and when you arrive in Ireland you are automatically entitled to remain in Ireland for a period no greater than 90 days without needing to submit any special or formal paperwork. However, if you intend to stay in Ireland for a period greater than 90 days then you will need to register with the local police. If you are under age 16, were born in Ireland or the United Kingdom or are a woman married to or the widow of an Irish citizen, then you are exempt from this requirement. Otherwise, you have 3 months to register with the police, but it is preferable to do it within a few days of arriving in Ireland. When you go to the police station to register, you will need to make sure that you have your passport with you. You will also need four passport size photos of yourself and documentation that supports your reason for being in the country. This can be a work permit, admission to a college or university or proof of funds to cover your stay. If all goes well, you will be issued a permission to remain in the country for 12 months and a Certificate of Registration, also known as a Green Book, which will need to be kept current. You will need to make sure that you do not let your permission to remain lapse as it can be renewed in 12-month periods. At each renewal, you will have to present supporting documentation again. If there are ever any changes in your circumstances, you will have to notify your Registration Officer within 7 days of the change. You should know that you are not permitted to engage in any activity that your permit does not specifically allow. For instance, if you have a student permit then you cannot work. The four categories for residence permits are: student, retiree, employed or self-employed and providing or receiving a service in Ireland. Student permits are valid for the length of the course. Employed, self-employed and retiree permits are generally valid for 5 years. And the last permit is valid for the duration of the service. General Consulates of Ireland:
